Give Google What Google Wants (SEO tips for content marketing)

Aug 27, 2019

As marketers and business owners, we are constantly trying to get eyes on our content. It's a struggle! But totally doable. Check out my content marketing training for more info.

But what I want to talk to you about today is to get Google's eyes on your content!

Organic search is a steadfast channel to get eyes on all your wonderful content (both Google's eyes and the eyes of your target audience).

Do what Google wants

Google wants to deliver the right content to the right searcher. So if your content shows up in a google search and the visitor clicks on it, goes to your site and immediately leaves, Google knows this and will not be happy with you. What happens?  Your website drops in ranking....

In 2019, Google stresses the following components:

  • Expertise
  • Authority
  • Trustworthiness

How to establish expertise

Create a very thorough section about your targeted topic on your site. For example, if you provide content marketing for your clients, then have a page or an entire section on your site all about content marketing.

Make sure you have a bio on your site that includes your education, awards, speaking engagements, etc...

Do not only provide awesome content on your site but also in other places (and be sure to link back to your site!!!). Google doesn't only look at your website but it looks for you and your brand all over the web. So do guest blogging, create a podcast or be a speaker on someone else's podcast, create a YouTube video channel, write on LinkedIn, have social media profiles, etc.

How to build authority

Google loves amazing content, so create amazing content!

You can create content that your target audience loves as well as Google by going in depth on a topic. This means you create longer articles, include links for more information, cover every angle of your subject.

How to be trustworthy

First and foremost, you need a secure site. This is vital. I still see too many sites with HTTP. You NEED to have the s, the security. So your website address needs to start with HTTPS.

Whenever you write content, make sure YOU write it or someone you hired. It cannot be copied and pasted from other sites (that's plagiarism). If Google sees you are taking content from another website, it can blacklist you on google searches. You don't want that!

Create a "Privacy Policy" legal page that explains what happens with users information that they may give you.

Add reviews and testimonials to your site, Google loves this.
